Over the last ten years, I have collected therapeutic metaphors that I have used as a practicing psychologist with kids, teens, and parents. These metaphors help parents and teens communicate when they feel stuck. These metaphors are familiar, accessible, vivid, and funny, and make use of humor and pop culture to make them more accessible to teens. They captivate and inspire parents and teens to help them shift perspectives. This became the basis for my book, What do I do when my teen just won’t listen. The book can be read cover to cover, or, when parents and teens feel stuck, they can refer back to the relevant metaphor to generate a new discussion. This book can be a valuable tool to help parents and teens shift perspective when they feel stuck and direct communication is breaking down.
I wrote this book because I am interested in the nuances of communication between parents and teens, and how metaphors can help that communication.
